The London Borough of Croydon is situated in south London sitting in-between Bromley and Sutton. Croydon’s population is the 2nd highest at 388k, edged out by Barnet’s 399k. There is then quite a drop to 3rd placed Newham at 355k. This borough is named after the historic town of Croydon that makes up around 50% of the population. The Thornton Heath district is also of note at 65k alongside Coulsdon town at 25k. Croydon’s area is well known as being a retail hub, but more so for Crystal Palace who have played at Selhurst Park in the suburb of Selhurst since 1924. This is one of the lowest attendance Premier League stadiums holding approx 26,000 (ranks 17th/20th).
Doorstep Loans in Croydon (Borough), London
This is the 2nd largest borough, but of the leading 5, Croydon’s poverty rate is the lowest of the bunch at 22%. With this in mind, it was unclear just what results we would see when conducting searches through Lenders Compared for coverage. There was a few postcodes to study to unveil local providers. Most of which run across the CR code range and then there was single code appearances for BR, SE and SW. Once searched the number of active firms to appear stood at 7. This included Burdett Trading, Ealing Trading, Loans at Home, Manor House, Morses, Murdons and Owen Roy Pickering. This ties them with Newham (at 7) for joint highest of the leading 5 boroughs.
The London Borough of Barnet is the most highly populated of the 32 London boroughs. The population stands at 399,000+ vs Croydon’s 388,000+. The area in focus sits north surrounded by Enfield and Harrow. For settlements within, the same named Barnet has been a market town since the 13th century. Barnet’s population at 48k is smaller than Edgware at 76k. Outside of these towns, Finchley is a notable large district at 65k. Within it there is East Finchley that stands out for being the UK home of McDonald’s. This is the world’s largest restaurant chain with close to 39,000 restaurants. There are 1270 outlets across the UK that began with a 1974 debut opening in Woolwich.

This borough’s postcode range spans across 4 areas (EN, N, NW, HA), although most cover N and NW. In total there was 16 codes that were entered to unveil prices on Lenders Compared. The result of the searches saw just 4 firms appear that included Ealing Trading Company, Loans at Home, Manor House Supplies and Morses Club. More options were expected since this is the #1 populated borough. The other 4 leading locations had between 6 and 7 lender options each time that proves that coverage is limited. It is the case that Barnet’s poverty rate was the 2nd lowest of the 5 at 23%, but then and again Croydon was lowest at 22% and this produced 7 results.
This county, an English island, is home to just over 140,000 people. The IOW has 2 main towns of a similar population size. Ryde is the largest with around 30,000 vs Newport’s 25,000. Smaller locations include Cowes and Sandown that float around the 12k mark. Ryde is known as the “Town on the Beach” and has become integral as the gateway to the island from the many operating ferries. There are up to 200 ferry crossings a day. The Hovertravel company is of note in delivering rides from Portsmouth to this destination in under 10 minutes. This is the UK’s only passenger hovercraft company currently operating and the world’s longest running commercial service, established in 1965.
Doorstep Loans in Ryde, Isle of Wight, South East
The Isle of Wight was the final county to cover in the South East region based on who has the largest sized city/town. It was interesting to explore coverage here, but few options were expected based on the population size in question of 30k. The IOW’s postcodes are assigned on Portsmouth’s PO code. The county codes range from PO30 to PO41. Ryde’s specific postcode is PO33 and when searched this unveiled just the 2 lender options. The lenders that offered coverage locally were Morses Club and Short Term Finance. It was interesting in not seeing Loans at Home make an appearance. We did for reference expand to check Newport’s coverage and the same options popped up.
Guildford measured as Surrey’s largest town at 85,000 against Woking’s 63,000. Both towns have larger populations when factoring the Boroughs that covers Guildford’s (150k+) and Woking’s (100k+). These towns stand out in the county, whilst the other locations are small noting Esher, Ewell, Walton-on-Thames etc. This town has been a popular hub for major businesses including Allianz, Colgate-Palmolive, Ericsson, Philips Electronics and Sanofi. It is however gaming that grabs the headlines and this has brought with it the title of the “Hollywood of Video Games”. Locals include Criterion Games, Hello Games and Media Molecule, but the now closed Bullfrog Productions is perhaps the most famous, having produced Theme Park, alongside Dungeon Keeper, Magic Carpet, Populous and Syndicate.
Doorstep Loans in Guildford, Surrey, South East
This may be a popular destination for business and gaming giants, but due to the small county size it isn’t an ideal location for doorstep lenders to target for leads. With this in mind, we didn’t expect to see many options popping up on our postcode checks. These checks were undertaken across Guildford’s postcodes that spans between the range of GU1 and GU5. As it turned out, just 2 lenders in fact stepped forward to offer local coverage and these were the regular appearances from Loans at Home and Morses Club. This didn’t turn out to be a fluke as we also analysed Woking’s postcodes and the same pair were again the only options.
The county of West Sussex has 2 sizeable towns with closely matched population sizes. It is however Crawley that just leads at 114,000+ ahead of Worthing at 110,000+. Outside of these, you are then left with much smaller locations such as Bognor Regis, Littlehampton and Shoreham-by-Sea that all have populations across the lower to upper 20k region. Crawley’s most famed destination is Gatwick Airport. This is not actually based in the town, but it is situated within the Crawley Borough. Gatwick is the UK’s 2nd busiest, overshadowed somewhat by Heathrow. There is significance however when you factor in all of London’s airports. Once bunched together this makes London the world’s busiest city airport system.

To research coverage we searched Crawley’s postcodes that includes RH6 (Gatwick’s location), alongside RH10 and RH11. Once completed the number of lenders offering coverage came in at 4 firms. Loans at Home and Morses Club were expected to appear and they were bunched alongside Burdett Trading Co and Owen Roy Pickering. Each of these have a small presence across both London and the South East. Overall, we didn’t expect many options in this area. This is a town that has always been known for low unemployment levels, although interestingly a recent thinktank (the Centre for Cities) identified this location as the place in Britain at the highest risk of widespread job losses due to the pandemic.
Maidstone is Kent’s largest town with a population of 155,000, whilst the larger Borough has just over 170,000. Outside of this you have the Medway Towns that collectively homes around 280,000 with Medway’s key locations including Gillingham (108k) and Chatham (80k). Maidstone’s historic claim to fame was Edward Sharp & Sons that in its heyday was the world’s largest toffee manufacturer. This was back in 1933, with the company roots heading back to 1878. This company was sold on to Trebor and later acquired by Cadbury. It was a shame to see the end of Sharp’s toffee in the late 90s. The most recognisable local brand active today is the speaker manufacturer KEF who’ve operated since 1961.

To study Maidstone’s loan options we entered postcode searches across the range of ME14 and ME18. These searches went on to uncover 5 active sector lenders. The big 2 brands made their normal appearances in Loans at Home and Morses Club, but the others were small localised firms. These included Burdett Trading, Medcraft Finance and M H Finance. Of this trio only M H actually has a website and so they would be the only viable challenge to the major brands of this niche. We did for reference also explore the Medway Towns that also includes Rainham, Rochester & Strood, but there was no further companies popping up on any postcode queries.
Berkshire’s leading towns are closely matched for population. Slough however just edges it with 165,000 residents against Reading’s 162,000. We initially thought that Reading would be the clear frontrunner, but this is only the case when factoring Reading’s urban area that makes up around 337,000. Bracknell is the 3rd location of note at 85,000. The flagship town in focus put itself on the map with the Slough Trading Estate. This is pitched as Europe’s largest trading estate in single ownership and is the local base for such companies as Ferrari, Mars and O2. Whilst impressive, this town’s legacy tends to shift to Mr David Brent and his local (now demolished) Wernham Hogg branch, as depicted in The Office.

Since the famous Estate opened in 1920 workers have flocked to work here from across the globe. So much so that even the media have coined it as the “immigration town”. Locals and those that arrive certainly have good work ethics. This is evident from unemployment levels of 1.4% that is a third of the UK average of 4.5%. It was interesting to find out just how much coverage we’d see here when running postcode checks that were entered for SL1, SL2 & SL3. The results however unveiled just 4 lender options. This included the majors Loans at Home and Morses Club. Ealing Trading Company was another recognisable firm and they were joined by Blackwell Finance.
The city of Oxford is the flagship destination of Oxfordshire. Many people within the county are bunched together here with the population count standing at around 152,000. This is significant when you consider that all other local locations have less than 50,000 people living there noting such towns as Abingdon-on-Thames, Banbury and Bicester. Oxford’s stunning architecture and famous museums has made it a popular tourist hotspot. You also have the crowds of students, with some 24,000 being placed at the University of Oxford (pictured). This stands out of course as being the oldest university in the English-speaking world (rooted to 1096). It’s also regularly ranked within the top 5 universities in the world.

This is an integral area of Oxfordshire and so you’d expect competing lenders to be targeting this location in greater numbers. As it turned out, our research picked out 6 lender entries that was tied for the highest in the region with Milton Keynes. When carrying out the checks the postcodes that were searched included OX1, OX2, OX3 & OX4. The companies that did appear are those that our data showed were active in the widest number of locations across the UK. That included Morses Club, Loans at Home, Naylors Finance, Short Term Finance, Ealing Trading Company & Mutual. Those were the actual top 5, whilst Mutual was tied for 6th with a rival.
Milton Keynes (abbreviated as MK) is a large town and the largest in fact in the county of Buckinghamshire. MK’s population sits close to 185,000 whilst the larger urban area that consists of the towns Bletchley, Newport Pagnell and Woburn Sands makes up close to an estimated 245,000 population. Other areas of note across the county are Wycombe (125k) and Aylesbury (90k). It is however MK that tops the county. This is an interesting town that has a booming economy and is famed as a hub for business start-ups. Many companies choose to operate locally and Formula One’s Red Bull Racing is one such notable example. Their HQ is situated in Tilbrook.

This is a key area for business, but on the flipside, there are areas that suffer from great poverty. It was no surprise in this instance to see greater options on the doorstep lending front. To uncover these we had to run many postcode searches including the main range of MK1 to MK15, as well as 17 & 19. In total there was 6 firms that stood forward. Loans at Home and Morses Club were the obvious ones. An interesting addition was Mutual who are well known for their low rates of interest. Naylors also appeared who have an impressive UK reach. Ealing Trading and Short Term Finance were the other firms operation across this popular town.
Hampshire has 2 competing major cities. Today we have focussed on the largest (Southampton) that has an estimated resident tally of around 270,000, whilst Portsmouth sits close to 250,000. Basingstoke is the only other location of note in this county that has around 115,000 people living there. The city in focus is perhaps most famed for its port that was the departure point for the Titanic. It today sees some of the world’s largest cruise ships. Southampton also of course competes in the Premier League where they play their games from the St Mary’s Stadium. Maintaining top flight football is never easy and this is something that their local neighbour knows well, with Pompy currently playing down in League One.

Postcode searches were conducted across the range of SO14 to SO19. There are a few other SO postcodes outside the area. We checked these and all of the same companies appeared. As the case with Brighton & Hove who have the largest population of the entire region, options were limited and we again saw just 3 entries. The big national market brands Loans at Home and Morses Club appeared (as was expected) whilst Short Term Finance was the 3rd firm to appear on searches. This trio will surely benefit greatly from targeting Southampton’s urban area (known as South Hampshire) that also includes Portsmouth. This hands them access to a potential 900,000 residents.
